• Journal Reading Reflections
Students will prepare a 1 page reaction paper about the readings. Students must write a reaction paper for each article. There will be no reaction paper required for the last readings. The reaction papers should be thoughtful and complete. Reaction papers will be graded on a pass/fail standard – if they show evidence that you reflected upon the questions and the readings, you will earn a passing mark. Connect the reflections to your own experiences and current work setting as well as our class. I don’t need a summary of the articles because I have read them as well. If you merely cite parts of the readings, summarize, or insert large sections of the phone book, then you will be in trouble.
  • Interview and Reflection
This assignment requires you to sit down with your principal or supervisor and discuss the evaluation process that is used at your organization. As a class we will discuss what questions you may want to ask. This reflection should be 2-3 pages in length reflecting on what you have learned and what questions and concerns it raised for you. We will discuss what we learned about each of our evaluation systems as a class.
  • Pre / Observation / Post Reflection
This assignment requires you to do a classroom observation of a peer. For the assignment you will conduct a pre-observation conference, conduct an observation, and do post- observation conference. You will write up a 2-3 page reflection on the experience on what you learned as well as challenges for you for the future.
  • Final Presentation
The course project is to design a training program for a certain kind or level of teaching. Topics might include math teaching in the middle school, teaching in diverse schools, special education teaching, early literacy programs or after school or out of school teaching. Each person will select a topic and write a 10-15 page paper describing - a) a training system for an evaluation, or b) develop a framework and a set of tools for evaluators. The paper will be judged on originality, feasibility and the degree to which course readings are integrated into the argument.
